Take it slow – Learn your Style

I recently made a post in the Style section discussing the often-changing trends and how people tend to use this as their style compass. This constant feel to switch up with the latest styles can be tied back to your home as well. Changing up your space is nice and often needed, but do not feel that switching up the space, based on the new “it” thing of the moment will bring the results you want. I am sure you know this, but sometimes a little reminder does not hurt. Your home showcases your style in every space whether it is in transition or full glam. The style is yours.

It is so easy to see the new latest trend and want to immediately rush and add it to your space. For the last 4 years, everyone has been in a tailspin, rushing to add shiplap to each corner of their spaces, barn doors on every pantry entryway. Do not let me mention how many E-A-T signs I see in kitchens. Listen, I am not knocking any of those design choices. I celebrate it. In this blog post, although I am a paid professional for designing homes; I see the rush decisions that are made by homeowners all the time of cramming items into their spaces. I only ask that you check your inner style maven to see if this is “your” taste speaking or is it because the latest popular designer said so. Here is why you should hold off on rushing into each trend:

  • It may or may not be your style. You end up spending money to create something that you will not like, just because you see it somewhere else.
  • Functionality. It may not be functional for the space you’re in. Design for your current space by adjusting material and furniture to the size of the room. You don’t need to add an oversized sectional in a small corner.

As a designer, the first question I ask clients is, what is your style? Traditional, contemporary, modern, etc. If unsure, I provide a series of style examples to review to gather their tastes during this season of their life. It is the goal of the designer to bring the clients vision to life and everyone has a certain style or preferred design taste, even if they are unsure of what it is.

For a few, it is difficult to know what or how to decorate your space even with an understanding of what your style is. In this case, find a designer that can help you create the space or spaces you will like. Designers have different options and methods to better assist your style needs.

Don’t be a afraid to take it slow and learn what you like.
