Let’s DIY.
I did a thing the other day. Well I made the decision to do this thing awhile ago. You see I saw a piece of art. A beautiful piece of art. It was online. I scrolled to see the price and noticed it was a bit out the my range for spending that month.
As I stared at the art – I noticed that it may be something that I can DIY myself, so I traveled to my local hardware store and picked up some plaster, pulled an extra large canvas I had in the garage out (from my two for one sale last year) and went to work.
This is the original piece. See how beautiful it is? I hope I am not alone in admiring the beauty of this piece.
I don’t have the original links to the location of this art. I saved the picture but forgot the details of its origin.
Step 1: On a clean canvas I added plaster/spackling. There was no method to how I placed it on the canvas. I went sporadically around the frame. I followed the outline of the original piece of art as closely as I could.
Step 2: I let the spackling dry (3 full days). The spackling started out a pale pink and when dried was completely white.
Step 3: Sealing time. I sealed the piece with a mix of Krylon sealant and Kamar varnish. I put 3 coats on it (probably overkill but this is my first time). I let it settle for another day to ensure everything was completely dry. My thought was that I did not want the spackling to become loose or unprotected under the paint.
Step 4: Color time. I used prime and coat spray paint by Krylon in the color in “canvas.” I sprayed several coats. I followed up with the clear spray to give it shine in some spots but for now I wanted the overall look to be matte. I let the paint dry another day.
I screwed D-ring picture hangers on the back of the canvas and hung the frame on the wall.
Note: I used my best judgment in letting the canvas dry. You can adjust the timeframe based on the amount of spackling you use.
Check out the final product.
What do you think? Would you try it?
